Farscape as gaming group

[snip] But in rewatching the show, I’m struck by how strongly Farscape seems modeled on the story/structure of a gaming group. Not ‘game-based fiction’, but the group itself. [/snip]

Pocahontas/Avatar

Giggleworthy and quite true.

And yet it makes me question, does originality really matter when there's a good story in need of telling? It's becoming rare for books, movies, and TV shows to be based on completely original concepts nowadays. I don't think that's necessarily based on a lack of original ideas, but rather the sheer amount of great ideas and stories that have been told and forgotten, yet are still relevant today.

Interdimensional Portals Drawn With Nothing But Light

Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza are light graffiti artists, creating otherworldly photographs using various light sources. The eye-popping scenes they compose evoke wormholes, time-travel devices, and eerily lit portals to other worlds.

Top recording engineers explain why music sounds awful

Jimmy Douglass talked about the overuse of dynamic range compression, admitting that since most music is listened to over crappy computer speakers or cheap earbuds, compression is required to make it sound acceptable. Sad, but true.

Sad, but true, indeed. The uncertain future of music has me a little worried.

It's crazy that there's an entire generation of kids who think 256kbps MP3's listened to through Apple iPod earbuds is what music is supposed to sound like.

Even crazier is the fact that the quality of music has regressed, rather than progressed. We've gone from CD-quality audio to compressed formats such as MP3 and AAC.

Is the temptation of convenience destroying high quality audio and the future of music?

Letter from Philip K. Dick to Jeff Walker regarding "Blade Runner"

Amazing letter. His thoughts and predictions were spot-on, too; Blade Runner definitely changed how we approach science fiction, and had a massive influence on the genre (and even works not of the genre) in a way that Philip K. Dick's works by themselves could not have.

It's also interesting how the dark and gritty style presented in Blade Runner is still directly influencing present-day works. The new Battlestar Galactica springs to mind. When it comes to science fiction, there's just something about this style of story-telling that allows the reader/viewer to relate to it much more easily. It bridges a gap, presenting the strange and crazy ideas found in sci-fi in a much more grounded, realistic way.

I don't think we've seen the pinnacle of this style of sci-fi in film and television yet. Blade runner continues to revolutionise our concepts of what science fiction is, and what it can be.
